Patients treated at our inpatient wards are housed in 2- or 4 bed rooms. We incorporate the concept of the multifactorial genesis (with biological, psychological, and social factors) of psychiatric disorders into our treatment.
The general wards 06A and 04B each have the capacity for concomitant treatment of 17 patients. Though various psychiatric disorders are treated, focus is placed on the treatment of patients with mood disorders and psychotic disorders. In the context of acute treatment, patients with organic psychoses, addiction or anxiety disorders are also cared for. Ward 04D is an acute ward with capacity to treat 11 patients, with a similar focus.
The psychiatric intermediate care (IMC) ward 04C provides care for up to 8 patients at a time and is equipped to allow for monitoring of vital functions. Nurses working on this ward have specialized training for intensive care, though mechanical ventilation is not performed. This ward provides care to patients with severe, acute, mental illnesses and patients with comorbid physical disorders requiring more intensive care. Patients who are treated at the psychiatric IMC station 04C are often referred by the Department’s other psychiatric wards or from other psychiatric departments in Vienna and the surrounding area. Patients are also referred by other non-psychiatric departments at the Medical University of Vienna, including the Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery and the Department of Emergency Medicine. For example, patients are treated after a suicide attempt, in the case of severe delirium, or if patients with eating disorders are severely underweight.
If, due to their psychiatric disorder, patients are not capable of sound judgement, or if they are deemed to be of acute danger to themselves or others, patients may be committed and treated in accordance with the Austrian “Unterbringungsgesetz”.
Depending on the patient and their course of disease, therapeutic home visits may be arranged.

In addition to psychiatric care, patients are cared for by nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, and have the opportunity to consult with clinical psychologists and social workers.
In addition, the Clinical Division of General Psychiatry has access to, and provides diagnostic care via, its sleep and electrophysiological laboratories. The sleep laboratory is serviced via a collaboration with the Department of Neurology.
